The Speed Limit is Raised on I-71 When Speed Rollers® is added to the Crew on Challenging Interstate Coating Contract
Leading construction and bridge painting contractor turns to Speed Rollers to speed through sound barrier wall coating project
07-15-2004 - Cincinnati, OH - When painting contractor L&M Lignos of Cleveland, OH was awarded a half-million square foot project to paint acoustic retaining walls on Interstate 71 outside of Cincinnati, the foreman knew he had a challenge. No lane closures allowed, summer heat, high winds resulting from speeding traffic, a cramped work environment, a tough surface, and a high-performance coating to be applied, and a tight deadline all pointed toward a challenging project.
"We're applying a Tamm's coating product that is like pancake batter - 35 SQ FT per gallon coverage," said Vokois. The heavy coating and tight proximity to traffic eliminated spraying as an option, and traditional dip and roll was painfully slow.
When L&M foreman Jim Vokois learned of Speed Rollers™ fluid application tool, however, he thought he might have found a solution that would turn a challenging project into a profitable one. After some tests with the product, L&M Lignos found that the Speed Rollers design is ideal for quickly applying a uniform, high-quality coat for high-solids coatings like those called for in the contract. Plus, since the crew is rolling, not spraying, containment is not an issue.
L&M put initially put four Speed Rollers HS Model 2500 applicator tools on the project. "We experienced production rates of 2-3 times what we expected to get with dip and roll." L&M quickly added 5 more Speed Rollers and additional crew to the project, and now expects to easily finish the job this season rather than next. "Since the Speed Rollers allow us to apply the coating so quickly, our biggest challenge now is moving equipment and product to the wall to keep up with the guys who are Speed Rolling."
